Helping end caregiver burnout with a 3-part caregiver support system

Professional caregivers reviewing an Individual Support Plan

Caring for someone you love is a deeply meaningful journey — but it can also feel overwhelming. Without the right support systems in place, caregivers can quickly experience burnout. Between medical needs, emotional support, and daily tasks, caregivers often carry a heavy load. Without the right tools and resources, even the most dedicated caregivers risk running on empty.

Below is the 3-part support system we use to give the average caregiver the tools and skills professional caregiving agencies rely on — including how to build a team of trained additional caregivers who work a few days a week, every week, so the main caregiver gets consistent time off, not just occasional respite.

Part 1: Our introductory eBook

Our eBook, How to End Caregiver Burnout, explains the causes of caregiver burnout, who we are, what we do, and why every caregiver needs a Plan of Care in place before starting caregiving. A strong plan of care should highlight the care recipient's conditions, medications, and devices; provide step-by-step caregiving instructions; and outline how the caregiver themselves will be supported — including scheduling consistent additional caregivers.

A cautionary example: Consider a caregiver — call her Marie — who has been quietly caring for her spouse around the clock for years, with no backup plan and no one checking in. Marie's own health has been declining, but she's kept going because "there's no one else." One day, something happens to Marie at home, and because there is no plan of care and no one scheduled to check in, her spouse goes without care for far longer than anyone would want. It's a scenario that plays out in different forms across the country, and it's exactly what a Plan of Care and a scheduled support system are built to prevent — because it isn't fair to either person for the caregiver to be a single point of failure.

Part 2: Our online training courses

A Plan of Care is a Book of Caregiving Instructions filled with everything related to a person's ailments and care needs, so everyone involved knows what to do. Most professional caregiving agencies call this an Individual Support Plan (ISP). At SHS&S, we call ours a Holistic Support Plan (HSP) — because it also includes information and training to support the main caregiver, not just the person they're caring for.

No one would attempt to bake something for the first time without a recipe, or change a car's alternator without a manual. Caregiving is no different — yet many caregivers are thrown into it with no instructions and no one to turn to for advice. That's the gap a Plan of Care is meant to close.

Part 3: Ongoing coaching

Beyond the initial training, our monthly coaching and mentoring program gives caregivers continued support, additional tools and resources, and small-group mentorship — so no one has to keep figuring it out alone.
